| Organic
Farm Visit |
| Date: |
October 29, 2005, 11:00 a.m. to 5
p.m. |
| Venue: |
Organic Farm Simply-Organic, Yuen Long |
Banana's maturity is
controlled by ethylene.
Animal's fecal matters provide nitrogen to the soil.
The beetle Ladybird is a good insect because it eats fruit flies
and aphids.
These are just a few farming wisdoms we learned in our organic
farm tour on October 29.
Ah Pad, the boss of organic farm Simply-Organic, first taught
us what organic farming is in her outdoor classroom. After knowing
the basic dos and don'ts, we walked to the farm to plant tomatoes,
to harvest ears of corn, and to feed the giant pig and goats. This
hands-on experience reinforced what we had learned in the classroom
(and consumed much of our energy too).
Carrying our harvests, we went to the Organic Cafˆm located near
a pond and had our lunch there. This was our first time to try
organic country cooking outdoor, and our menu included the following
healthy dishes: Carrots & Ginger Soup, Organic Salad with Balsamic
Vinegar, Spelt Pasta with Olive Oil, and Whole-wheat Bread and
Muffins. After such a wonderful organic meal, Ah Pad taught us
how to fish with a bamboo rod, and we all sat quietly near the
pond, waiting for our big fish.
Time is never long enough when we are having fun. The six-hour
tour finished at 5:00 pm sharp (right before the mosquitoes wake
up), and a shuttle bus took us back to the city. Everyone shared
his or her funny experiences on the way back as we were content
with a stomach-load of organic food. Our most memorable moment
was the time we ate Choy Sum raw; can you believe they could actually
be as sweet as super-sweet corn?
That's the beauty of the natural way; that's the beauty of going
organic!

Study Tour to Beijing Party School |
| Date: |
May 16, 2005 |
| Venue: |
Beijing Party School |
| 1-day Study Tour to Beijing Party
School on
Ever thought of learning forty years of Chinese economic and political
development in one day? Or meeting and exchanging ideas with over
forty prominent Chinese political and business leaders in one day?
In the first-ever CUMBA AA Beijing Party School One-Day Study
tour, our first overseas debut, forty CUMBA alumni and business
leaders from different corporations were honored to have the opportunity
to learn from political leaders and professors from the Beijing
Party School in this one-day study tour offered exclusively to
CUMBA Alumni Association thanks to the help of alumni Ms. Leonie
Ki and Mr. Armstrong Lee who had facilitated in opening up this
unprecedented opportunity to CUMBA alumni.
The first lecture conducted by Professor Chen covered the political
history of the communist party and brought to life by Professor
Chen with vivid examples and personal experiences. Her sharing
was unlike anything one would normally read from books, and her
thoughts and vision inspired all of us to think for the future
of China in a new perspective.
The second lecture conducted by Professor Wang focused on the
economic development of China in the last 40 years. His analysis
was very detailed and was backed by interesting statistics which
all helped to illustrate what the future of China was to become.
While participating alumni were keen on posing questions during
the lectures. Professors Chen and Wang were also enthusiastic in
addressing the queries with candid responses and no question was
left unanswered. One of the participants remarked, "Listening
to these two lectures is like taking in knowledge from over tens
of
volumes of Chinese economic and political history in one day!" How great is that to conclude a great tour like this one!

| Elderly
Home Visit |
This year, our Charity Task Force
has joined Po Leung Kuk District Elderly Campaign by forming a team
of volunteers to have home visit with the elderly in Kwun Tong District.
Some of the comments from our alumni are:
It is a well organized event. The elderly folks are very easy
going and smart. My kids surely enjoyed this meaningful event.
They said that it is a pleasant learning exposure for them. No
matter how bad is the weather, our hearts are warm. Let me know
what I can assist in future.
~
Annie (EMBA 2006)
Thanks for your arrangement for such a meaningful event! After
this visit, it brought me many happiness and meaningful thoughts
from the healthy and cheerful elderly. I'd loved them very much!
I do think this elderly centre is brilliant. They care and share!
As for the aging problems, this kind of elderly centre (other than
youth centre) should be promoted not only the district but throughout
HK!
~
Mian (Weekend MBA 2006)
It was really a nice day I enjoyed. Thanks for your hard work
to organize such a wonderful charity visit. Could we see the pictures
for the visit they took that day? Look forward to the pictures:)
~ Benny Zhong (MBA 2006)
I am glad to have this valuable opportunity to join the event.
If there is any event in the future, please let me know.
~
Irene
Lam (MBA 1992)
Wish we will have more alumni joining our charity events in the coming
future!!!!

| Music
Appreciation conducted by alumnus Mr. Benjamin Hsu (2005¡VZ05) |
| Date: |
July & August |
| Venue: |
MBA Town Centre |
"Music is never about anything. Music
just is. Music is notes, beautiful notes and sounds put together
in such a way that we get pleasure out of listening to them, and
that's all it is." (Leonard Bernstein on "What is music?")
Over the course of CUMBA Alumni Association's "Music
Appreciation" classes, Mr. Benjamin Hsu not only taught
us what classical music is, but also led us to explore
this precious treasure by showing us where to find it,
and how to appreciate it. His tremendous effort, dedication,
and patience in conducting eight sessions of Classical
Music Appreciation for us is in itself priceless.
Participants of the class were impressed by Benjamin's
passion, and
were thankful for his sharing. His lectures were always
well prepared, and his teaching was so unique and systematic
that even someone without music background can appreciate
music at a sophisticated level, distinguishing a concerto
from a sonata. This was the gift that Benjamin gave us.
After eight sessions, all participants asked Benjamin
the same question.
"Could you teach us an intermediate class again?"
His answer, in itself music to the ear, is¡K¡K¡K. "Yes!"
Stay tuned for Benjamin's popular class very soon!
Once again, million thanks to Benjamin and all participants'
support to the activity

| Understanding
Xuan Kong Fung Shui (2005-Z04) |
| Date: |
June 16, 2005 (Thursday, 7:30 p.m.
to 9:20 p.m.) |
| Venue: |
AMBER ROOM, MBA Town Centre |
| Who says Fung Shui ("Wind" and "Water")
is beyond the layman's grasp! Xuan Kong Fung Shui (¥ÈªÅ·¤ô) master Mr.
Johnny Chan, lecturer at our recent talk 'Understanding Xuan Kong
Fung Shui',
demonstrated to a full-house of participants how Fung Shui can be
approached just like any MBA subject ¡V through understanding of principles,
theories, and case studies!
In his two-hour lecture, Johnny explained the use of the Chinese
compass (Luopan), and the techniques of object positioning to attract
good luck and to bring harmony to our surroundings. Besides principles
and theories, Johnny shared two real cases of how good Fung Shui
had brought positive effects to one's health and fortune. In the
Q&A session, participants showered Johnny with interesting
questions, which helped shed light on how ancient Chinese wisdom
could still be of relevance to contemporary settings and why there
has been a growing appreciation in geomancy and ancient Chinese
culture.

| Introductory
Lecture on Porcelain Painting (2005-Z03) |
| Date: |
March 16, 2005 |
| Venue: |
Porcelain Painting Workshop (Unit C, 26/F, Eastern
Commercial Centre, 83 Nam On Street,
Shau Kei Wan, Hong Kong) |
Porcelain painting requires
concentration, stamina, and, most importantly, PATIENCE.
Don't they sound like the requirements of MBA study?
Porcelain painting is not only an art form originated in China
(Ming Dynasty) but is also a discipline that trains the human mind.
14 CUMBA alumni took up this challenge and attended the lecture
led by Ms. Amy Chan, well-known porcelain artist certified by the
International Porcelain Artists and Teachers, Inc., The British
Porcelain Artist & Westfield House, and Australian Porcelain
Artists and Teachers, Inc.
The lecture gave participants the opportunity to appreciate Porcelain
Painting, to learn how to paint, and how to tell the differences
among different painting skills. In addition to the lecture, participants
also had a chance to paint on porcelain, and received a personal
guided tour of Ms. Chan's artistic pieces in her workshop. Everyone
was amazed and impressed by her works and was very grateful for
her guidance and sharing. Originally intended for two hours only,
the lecture received such overwhelming response that it had to
be extended for an extra hour before participants could have enough
of the fun!
Some of Ms. Amy Chan's works are featured
in the following website:
http://www.porcelainpainting.com.
To share the happy moments of the activity, please see below snapshots.

| Fung
Shui Introductory Lecture (2005-Z02) |
| Date: |
February 19, 2005 |
| Venue: |
Bon Appetit Cafˆm |
All You Have to
Know about METAL, WATER, WOOD, FIRE, EARTH and More¡K¡K
Metal generates
water, which in turn generates wood, then fire, earth, and metal;
this is no integrated science lecture but essential
Fung Shui principles participants of the Fung Shui Introductory
Lecture organized by CUMBA Alumni Association have come to grasp
at the fun-filled two-hour lecture conducted by Mr. Cyril Yeung,
Fung Shui enthusiast and owner of Bon Appetit Cafˆm, where the lecture
was held on February 19.
The lecture was a treat of gourmet delicacies
and fun learning all rolled into one. Aromatic coffee and tasty
Napoleons brought
participants to the first part of the lecture which focused on
the theories of Fung Shui, Yin & Yang, and general forecast.Applications
then followed with real-life examples. Participants were most
interested in learning how they could avoid unforeseeable risks,
improve the
harmony at home, choose the best apartment or house, and how
plastic surgery might affect one's fate. In fact, questions were
so overwhelming
the event had to extend for an extra hour!
To summarize the morale
of the lecture in one sentence: "The
sky and earth may tell you about probabilities in nature. To
turn this probability in your favor, you will still need a pair
of hard-working
hands!"
On behalf of the CUMBA Alumni Association, we would
like to thank participants for their support to this event, contributing
to a
full-house!Watch out for even more activities in the coming months,
and don't shy away from telling us what events you would like to
see organized your comments and suggestions help shape our work
more so than metal, earth, wood and fire!
