M-file Series -
Rocky LOK

One may find it mis-matched when looking at the face of Rocky. He looks much younger than he is (or even he was, effect of Botox, who knows?). The photo submitted for this M-file series shapes well for his maturity. Being communicative and energetic, he is currently the President for the CUMBA Alumni Association for the year of 2005 / 2006.

= Interviewer
= Rocky LOK

Which year and class did you graduate from?

I was seen as an "old" graduate even in the early days of my study (MC for the EMBA annual conference dinner in 2001, active participant and member of organizing committee for various activities, class representative attending the CUMBA AA council meetings, added to the fact that many of the truly "old graduates" are my ex-clients, ex-colleagues, ex-college-mates, ex-classmates, business contacts etc and we know each other well!).

So, in this big family of CUMBA, I was from EMBA 2003.

Why do you study for the MBA?

The first time I thought of pursuing an MBA was in 1990 (You may guess my age!). Due to extensive traveling and the desire to have further career advancement and development, I decided to realize the chance only when I am ready in career and be able to plan for myself freely (This is exactly the same answer I gave to Professor MUN and Professor Andrew CHAN during the interview session in Apr 2001!). CUHK EMBA was the logical choice for me. Of course, the attraction of Yijing and Chinese Culture blended with western exposure spoke for everything.

The objective of getting an MBA is two-folds for me, gaining knowledge and extending my networking capability.

Which industry are you now in?

I am now the Finance Director, Greater China for a Fortune 500 global food manufacturer that manufactures daily packaged food consumed by most of us.

You are definitely one of our customers. Thank you for your support and I trust that you will not ask me for discounts, as mine are mass products.

Would you mind giving us a brief history of your career life?

I started my career in the legacy Arthur Andersen & Co. Upon qualifying and thereafter, I kept on moving myself up in the career ladder through serving in different industries and companies, namely family business for 3 years+, local listed giant for 4 years+, multi-national luxurious group for 5 years+ (Still calculating my age?). While being a FCPA in HK and FCCA in UK, I am also a Chartered Secretary of the HK & UK Institutes.

Is there any unforgettable thing about your career life so far?

During pre-1997, the prolonged traveling made me crazy that I needed to think over where I was every morning when I woke up in order not to miss the scheduled bus (If the Law of Relativity is true, traveling could have been the trick that kept me of young looking!).

During post-1997, I was the one giving out piles of lay-off letters and removing more than ONE HALF of my resources under the cloud of the Asian crisis / currency turmoil (Well, this is part of the game of survival!).

What is your future plan?

Making progress in life, career, family, social circles, personal interest etc, AND Working with colleagues of the council of the CUMBA AA to bring about new momentum.

Is there any difficulty/problem your company is facing?

NO PROBLEM!

What I mean is that there is nothing in the world that is so difficult that it couldn't be solved. Adopting your own expectation and tuning the other's expectation so that an issue is passed and resolved is really a great piece of art to craft.

Is there any future opportunity or development in your field/company?

The future developments / opportunities are blocked by the current issues. Solving them would allow us to dig those out.

What is the most unforgettable thing during your study in the CUMBA?

The class of CUHK EMBA 2003 consists of a wonderful mix of talented musician, designer, artist, scientist, scholar, sportsman, muscleman, golfer..., not to mention the fact that all of them are successful businesspersons in their own right. I am proud of being a part of this class.

The 2-year period was always unforgettable.

30+ of us went out for a golf game in the first night. We had our own Yahoo e-group set up in the first week (Still maintaining hundreds of mails every month nowadays, added to the sharing of photos, files etc!). We had the Sep 11 in the first month (Top tier media professional in class of EMBA 2003 reporting on-site in New York!). We then had complaints in class in the first quarter (Nonetheless resulting in an extremely excellent learning environment thereafter!). We then had an elevated learning atmosphere in the end of the first half the year (More than 25 out of 40+ were submitting their completed homework for sharing without cheating!). We then had a study tour to Shanghai General Motor, Stock Exchange, and City Planning Bureau in the end of the first year (Yes, more than ONE HALF were attending!).

Into the second year, we were recognized as the noisiest class! We then encountered SARS in Hong Kong in the last half of the year (Many of us were exempted from traveling, thanks to SARS in HK SAR and elsewhere!). We overcome that in the last quarter and was the only class in town on Apr 4, 2003 Friday (Or probably the only class in Asia!)(We insisted for a lecture on that "Children's Day" while the whole Hong Kong was suspended for any classes from Mar 26, 2003 to Apr 6, 2003! This could have been the last class on "Children's Day" for this group of "children"! We ended with Pizzas and Drinks in the Town Center with strict discipline in cleanliness, tidiness and hygiene!). We also had our Graduation / Teacher Appreciation Dinner in the last month (More than half of the class were part of the Organizing Committee and the other half was assigned a tough task of attending the lecture before the Dinner!). Towards the last week, we had the most enjoyable study week in Seoul of South Korea where we were well treated at diplomatic level by the Seoul Municipal Government (Such a trip was nearly completely frustrated by SARS! But we succeeded in over-coming all obstacles and made it happened!). Towards the very last days, we (in Seoul) received the news of great changes in the Hong Kong SAR Government earlier than the general public in Hong Kong (Thanks to the media professional in class!).

Together, extra-ordinary people like us had led a wonderful class in two venues, the Tsimshatsui and Central Town Centers, and ended the course with wonderful classes, all of which are un-forgettable.

What is your hobby?

I am also a part time professional musician (What I mean is that we are playing as a group professionally while still being professional manager by career). You are invited to visit (http://home.netvigator.com/~cblau/khq/members.html#LYK). We are still performing a number of times professionally in Hong Kong and overseas every year. Occasionally, I was featured as a soloist in various occasions, local and overseas.

Apart from Music, PC computing, reading, swimming and hiking are my favorites.

What is your view of the coming development of HK?

Getting away from the down turn, resuming the energy and build another height.

Is there anything more you want to share with readers?

I could be reached at rockylok@alumni.cuhk.net. Write to us (aa-cumba@alumni.cuhk.edu.hk) and the Council of CUMBA AA will continue to cater for your needs and serve you well...
